SM STA. ROSA HOSTS CHESS MEET


WOOD PUSHER – Si G. Pedrito D. Bigueras (kaliwa) ng San Pablo City Information Office habang tinatanggap mula kay Danilo Devanadera ng Barangay Radio Control Unit, CIO, ang tropeyong kanyang napagwagian sa katatapos lamang na 2008 Laguna Non-Master Chess Championship na isinagawa kamakailan sa SM Sta. Rosa, Laguna at sponsored ng Laguna Chess Association (LCA). (SANDY BELARMINO)



SM Sta. Rosa hosted the 2008 Laguna Non-Master Chess Championship sponsored by Laguna Chess Association (LCA) and participated by 49 promising wood pushers in Calabarzon Region.

The two-day met, six round roving tournament provided an avenue to enhance the talents of home grown chessers in the region to prepare them on bigger league. The tournament according to LCA president Dr. Alfred Paez of Cabuyao was just one of the programs the association sponsors to sharpen the skills of the regional chess players.

Proclaimed winners were the following: First Prize: Rodolfo Ponopio, Calamba City; Second: Ricky Merano, San Pedro; third: Christopher Dejayco, Manila; fourth: Arnel Pinero, Sta. Cruz and fifth: Danilo Devanadera, San Pablo City.

Top ten players include Vicente Vargas, Cabuyao; Roy Manaloto; Mustapha Poingan, San Pablo City; Balden Corpuz and Ildefonso Mantupar, San Pablo City.

Prizes are P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P500 for first, second, third, fourth and fifth place respectively. (NANI CORTEZ)
